You're correct as regards fiction, Alan, but the advance on a
nonfiction work is generally made on the understanding the author
will likely use it to help pay for whatever necessary research and
permissions are required. In general, nonfiction works are sold on
the basis of a proposal and sample chapters rather than a finished work.
