Since the whole point of publishing is to create and market copies of
a work, my definition of a 'good book' is 'one that sells well'.
Not everyone will agree with that ('cuz some people are just
disagreeable nitpickers, y'know... :) but sales success is the only
universally applicable means of judging a book's appeal to the public.
On the other hand, the public has been known to buy tons of 'Pet
Rocks', porn, and other dreck, so the actual qualities of any book may
be less important than the topic.
Examples abound in the tabloids, which appear to sell very well.
