E-Ink actually makes one method of copying easier. Take your e-ink book and put it on a scanner bed. Most have enough depth of field they can easily scan the screen of an E-Ink reader. You can even blow up the Font size for easier recognition. Flipping the pages is a matter of pushing a button. The Kindle has the page button nicely beveled so that you don't even have to lift the reader. Scan and OCR. . . DRM defeated. The easier they make it for your eye to scan it the easier they make it for a machine to scan it. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Danny Stone Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 9:30 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ebook-community] Re: eBook security Yeah, but it's not legal to sell secrets. :) Except your own, or those of whom you love (assuming they don't object.) My mother wrote 2 novels, both of which I'm going to publish. My brother and I are going to fight, I think, but there is little to no reason to keep these well-written books a family secret. He'll try to sue me over it, I know, but he'll lose. Can't explain in open forum why, but he'll have the right to publish them TOO. I'm just gonna make him spend money to find that out, because I'm pretty sure he's not gonna spend 30 seconds to ask me. That's him, not his lawyer. (Siblings - gotta love 'em!) DRM is a good way to annoy the customer, but it doesn't actually protect content, which is why you would use it in the first place. DRM will slow down someone trying to copy the content, but you'd be amazed what someone with a word processor (and a lot of patience) can accomplish. Okay, so you put your greatest book on one of the new eBook tablet computers, and it's got the best copy-protection and DRM in the industry. Congratulations. Will that stop the patient typer with a word processor? That's why we only use DRM and/or copy-protection on sample works or licensed works that require it (which thankfully, so far, are few.) In fact, for Abstract Reality Magazine, the entire marketing plan allows for copying, as the income is coming from the sponsors, not the readers. We *WANT* them to copy (under a Creative Commons Attributive Noncommercial, No-Derivatives license.) The more they copy, the more money we make, because more people will buy from our sites (indirect sales.) In management, sometimes the best solution is to play your problems against each other, which is what I did for most of this marketing plan. If the entertainment industry would learn to do this, perhaps it would make more money without needing draconian laws to accomplish it. The authors are paid from 40% of gross receipts, which (if all goes well) should be a lot more than they would make from traditional marketing methods. And they have the option of upgrading their work to a POD version (with our strong suggestion that they add additional content to make it worth it to the readers.) This won't stop anyone from copying the new version, of course, but neither would DRM on the eBook version for the same reason.
