There are two ways for books to be listed in the Kindle bookstore.
Initially, Amazon selected titles from Mobipocket (which, as I'm sure
you know, they own) and converted them to Kindle format to help them
start off with a whole bunch of titles available when the reader came
out. This was a marketing ploy--Sony has a very limited number of
titles (comparatively) for their reader; Amazon launched Kindle with
more than three times as many.
However, it's also possible to open an actual account and submit
titles ONLY to Kindle. If you do that, however, the Mobi-based sales
won't show up in it, only the sales of the titles you supply through
that account. I haven't figured out yet whether Mobi/Kindle sales show
up as Mobi sales, and probably won't because I just don't have that
kind of time.
