I think this is variable. I get almost all of my romance
recommendations from reviews at 4-5 blogs and websites, written
mainly by readers. I buy most of my self-published books based on a
couple of forums and a few blogs. I have yet to find good review
site for fantasy and literary work on the fragmented online community
but feel it is probably out there somewhere.

I contrast with this with the fact that I very rarely found magazine
book reviews to be much chop. Mostly these seemed preoccupied with
being clever and reinforcing what they found worthy (generally
ambiguous, open ended and depressing stories about unpleasant men and
depressed women, as far as I could tell). None of them could go a
year without denegrating one of the entertainment genres (romance,
fantasy, comic books etc).

So as far as that type of review goes I would be more inclined to
bury it than praise it. Peer-to-peer information has proved more
useful in alerting me to books I will enjoy. There are a few
exception to this, I find the book review in 'the Word' and now
defunt 'Altar' magazines to be pretty good and i read trade journals
for specialist non-fiction reviews.
