From the Megaphone FAQ:

Q: Once I copy files to the iPhone, can I view/access the files 
through the phone?

A: No, MegaPhone is only for file storage. There's no way to 
access your data via the iPhone's interface.

This is a common problem with the built in browsers. I have Opera 
on my Nintendo DS, and can happily wirelessly surf. I have 
complete access to the local file store, and I can easily read 
and write *when the flash memory is in a card reader*. But there 
is no way *through Opera* to read or write the local store. The 
browser has typically been built without those features. In some 
cases, even the local operating system does not include any way 
for an application to request the reading or writing of files.

In the case of the iPhone, only applications with specialized 
capabilities granted by Apple will be able to "cross the line" 
and access data stored from the outside.

Ultimately, I think that the "computer" abilities of the iPhone 
will have to be made available. Otherwise, the competition will 
simply catch up with Apple and provide a comparable device that 
runs something like a canned Linux variant. You won't see 
yourself as a Linux user -- but you would be able to store files 
on the device via USB, and open them with familiar applications
on the small device.

Ebooks pretty much need these features, because ebooks really 
need to be something you might buy for your first phone and 
read on your second. Most peoples reading stacks have longer 
lifetimes than their mobile phones.
