future of the Amazon Kindle

A couple of days ago news reports quoted a letter extolling the Kindle that Jeff Bezos had
just sent to Amazon shareholders. As a longtime ebook publisher who remembers the
demise of previous ebook reading devices, particularly the Gemstar models, certainly one of
my questions when the Kindle was announced was whether it would have longevity or not,
especially since it relies on a proprietary ebook format and got some extremely negative
initial reviews.
Granting that Jeff Bezos may be overoptimistic about the long-term market for the Kindle
and overstate its virtues, I infer from the fact that he sent this letter to shareholders that
Amazon isn't seeing anything in the way of slackening demand, technical issues, or customer
returns that would lead it to reconsider its commitment to the Kindle in the near term and
write it off as a failed experiment, otherwise he would be deemphasizing it rather than
showcasing it.
At this point it appears to me that the Kindle is becoming established in the market and will
be around for years to come. Anyone have good arguments to the contrary?
