Yes, that may be true. But I don't know that anyone is ready to take that kind of leap of faith, certainly not Amazon.
 
Whereas you can load any mp3 onto an iPod, Apple is doing very good business through iTunes. 
 
By tying the device to the service (service to the device), I'm sure Amazon is hoping to create the same consistent revenue stream.
 
It'd be nice if they had the same faith they had when they simply sold paper books. Their model was they sold everything, cheaper and are credited with driving many smaller bookstores out of existence.
 
What the model Amazon is following would be analogous to Sony only allowing you to buy cassette tapes from them when they created the Walkman. Today, every corporation is trying to be king of the hill and corner the market as they try to emulate Apple's business model.
 
Amazon and Wal-mart (among others) both came out with selling DRM free music and the public so far went "so?" and kept on buying iTunes for their iPods. Who's to say the same wouldn't happen with e-books?
 
Despite how much we e-book publishers and authors may rail against DRM, the general public doesn't really seem to care all that much. They have a Kindle and they buy their books from Amazon. It doesn't seem to matter or have occurred to them that they are locked into "only" purchasing their material from Amazon for as long as they have the device. Nor do they probably envision a scenario when Amazon won't be in existence so what does it matter if their books are DRM'd to Amazon?
