Mobipocket Reader at least isn't irrevocably tied to Windows. 

I'm not familiar with the other platforms, but the eBookMan which was
created by Franklin but which is now only sold as a new unit by Ectaco
( http://www.ectaco.com/eBookMan-PDA-Dictionaries-items/ ) at least
can be synced in Linux, and it uses Mobipocket. They were only
developed to run on Windows, but some people in the Yahoo eBookMan
Group ( http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/eBookMan/ ) figured a way
to get around that. 

I don't use Linux myself, so I don't really understand it technically,
but there are instructions in the group files dating back to May 2002
for command line syncing using a serial connection, followed up in
August of 2002 with instructions for doing it through the USB port,
followed again by the development of a graphical front end (see
http://www.nevis.columbia.edu/~oneill/ebookman/ ... sorry, I don't
have a date for this development).

I have to believe there is even more interest today in using Linux, so
 I would check with the groups using whatever device you own
specifically to see if something similar hasn't been developed for it.
Even if the manufacturers themselves have no interest in going beyond
Windows.
