ONIX FOR BOOKS GOES DIGITAL
ONIX for Books version 3.0 is coming later this year
and the good news is that it will handle digital
publications much more effectively than previous
versions.

At a meeting held at the London Book Fair earlier
this month, the ONIX for Books International Steer?
ing Committee approved plans for a new release of
ONIX for Books, Release 3.0, to be published in Sep?
tember 2008. The new release has three main goals.
First, it will improve the ways ONIX handles digital
products, along lines determined by a research study
completed in March this year. Second, it will remove
data elements that have been deprecated in ONIX
2.1, and finally it will add new functionality that has
been requested by users in various countries.
Because of the removal of deprecated elements, the
new release will not be fully backwards-compatible,
and for this reason it has to be regarded as a major
release. However, the intention is that, as far as
possible, new functionality will be added in ways
which do not change existing structures. Apart from
the removal of deprecated elements, many - if not
most - data element groups will remain backwards-compatible.

The detailed specification of the new release will be
finalized in June. Between now and Friday May 23,
there is an opportunity for national groups and users
in general to put forward any further requests for
new functionality. Anyone with requests should
send them to Michael Healy at the BISG office (email
Michael-xAHIewsI/[email protected]) and they will be considered by
the BISAC Metadata Committee
ONIX for Books 2.1, revisions 02 and 03, will of
course continue to be supported after the publica?
tion of Release 3.0. However, it is the intention of
the International Steering Committee that in due
course a "sunset date" will be agreed for these and
all earlier releases, so that the ONIX community can
standardize on a single version.
