Anybody could sit and listen to a wandering minstrel, but he
still had to be fed and clothed.

And he was a 'non-specialist' being newspaper, storyteller and
Wikipedia all rolled into one - maybe even a letter writing clerk
and postman!

Bill, wriggle as you might ;-), if you want quality you have to
pay for it. Wikipedia is not free at all, it is simply that
those designing, hosting, editing and contributing bear the
costs. The 'free' newspapers o nthe net are not free at all,
but are used as a sales medium for either hardprint, or for other
services, or for other advertising. When the returns go bad
whither the online newspaper? [and my answer to whither is
'wither' ;-)]

And it is actually worrying that so many need the net to contact
and communicate because we are losing - have largely lost - our
communal structures and the host of relationships that go with
them.

Education was made free to children over one hundred years ago in
most western states precisely to ensure the spread of knowledge
was wide, and because the new industrial society needed educated
people. The latter was the stronger reason and the 'contract'
was that these people would do the jobs of 'progress'. Was it
'free'?

'It all depends what you mean by...'

;-) Joseph
