HQ is just now getting into erotic romance, as are many other
companies. HQ Spice line is very new, and that's their erotic romance
line. They are the babes in the woods, with a few years under their
belts versus the 8 years or more the indies have in this field. Until
now, they've been doing sensual romance (Blaze)...or straight erotica
(not HQ but some other NY publishers). Different beasts.

Add to that a few things. One is that e DID pioneer erotic romance,
and NY ADMITS they started their own lines, due to the success in
indie/e...some of them after they failed to purchase indie companies
outright, ala Kensington and Ellora's Cave, as per Kate Duffy in 2006,
when asked at RT. Some later made print deals with the indies, ala S&S
with EC and Kensington with Samhain.

Also add to it that...you've got a few dozen NY lines for erotic
romance now, most of which put out 4 or less titles per month
(Kensington Aphrodesia was at 4, last time I checked, but that may be
in error today), while you have (literally) hundreds of erotic romance
imprints in indie/e, all of which are putting out between 4 and a
dozen or more titles per month.

And...let's go there. The indie/e authors who also work in NY have
told me that NY is STILL trying to figure out what works and what
doesn't, while the indies have largely, successfully found and grown
their niches...at least the ones who have been around a while have.
There's a reason that Hillary Sares isn't the head at Aphrodesia
anymore. She needed help in getting a competitive product out there,
according to authors inside Kensington, so she has a lead over her
now. The authors seem to think this arrangement is going to work
better, and I hope they're right.

Emily is ABSOLUTELY right.

The amusing thing is that several of the more established indie/es are
also carried on the brick and mortar shelves, and according to several
booksellers I've talked to, they want more of our work. Why? Simply
put, it sells, both in print and e.
