RE: MP3 players vs. eBook devices

Jon, I appreciate what you said but I think what we continue to miss in the whole MP3 / e-book reader comparison is both of these devices are luxury items aimed at a particular type of fan. 
 
No one NEEDS an iPod. 
 
iPods are purchased by music lovers, people who like music so much that they want a good device to enjoy it on. However or wherever they get their content (whether ripping it from their cd collection or shopping at iTunes) is secondary. They are willing to pay for the convenience of listening to music wherever they are.
 
That's all I'm saying about e-book readers. They are a luxury item for people who love reading. No one NEEDS a Kindle or Sony Reader, but we get/want them because we love reading and would like to do it on a device that allows us to carry lots of books.
 
It's the same thing with iPod owners. They like having gigabits of music with them all the time and don't mind paying a premium for a device that will allow them to do that. That's why e-reader device marketing is trying to capitalize on the idea of having lots of great books with you all the time for people who love reading.
 
Some people don't love music that much that they would ever an iPod, for others, listening at home or in the car is enough for them. Others wear their iPods all day, everyday. 
Some people don't/won't love reading that much that the idea of having books with them all time will make them ever purchase an e-book reader at ANY price. Some people get all of their books from the library. Some people will never give up paper books the same way some people hold onto vinyl recordings or invest thousands in high end home/car audio systems. 
 
And then some of us love reading and e-books so much that we find the exact model we can afford that allows us the pleasure of reading, whenever, wherever.
