Maybe because they aren't expensive.
I have one I paid $30 for over 3 years ago.
Last year I bought a backup MP3 player for the bike trip to Grand
Canyon. It cost all of $20.
Both record as well as play and have good sound, deep bass, multiple
play-tone settings, and menu options well beyond my needs and interests.

What's withholding ebooks from the larger marketplace?
Lack of format uniformity and obnoxious pricing from publishers.
Proprietary gatekeeping DRM crap to leech every possible nickel from
every customer with a limited range of titles rather than
concentrating on improving that range of titles and thereby improving
sales volume.

Actually... I'm not sure we indies aren't hurting ourselves somewhat
by bitching about how NY's slow and greedy.
Isn't there already enough competition on the electronic shelves to
suit everybody who may be scribbling or selling ebooks?
Should we be encouraging NY pubbers to get off the dime about ebooks,
or should we clam up and hope they never see the light as we sell our
own stuff?

To epubbers and eauthors: maybe we oughta just shut up about NY paper
pubbers and hope they remain stupid about ebooks and ereaders as long
as possible.

To ereaders: I can't and won't endorse piracy, BUT... if NY pubbers
won't make your ebooks, I also can't in good conscience give a rat's
rump if you scan your paper books for reading on your e-gadgets.
I always rip my new CDs to feed my (admittedly cheap) MP3 players. Who
wants to haul a stack of CDs around?

To pirates: Don't share ebooks from indie epublishers, okay? We're
trying to supply you with ebooks at reasonable prices and you aren't
having to take your eyes off Yeoman Rand or Seven of Nine or
who/whatever else in order to turn pages on a scanner. Give us a break.
