Most of the eBook retailers have in their contracts that you agree to
price your books with them at the same price you sell yourself. Thus,
if your book sells for $4 on your site, you should price it at $4 or
less on the retailer site. Clearly you make more money when selling
direct, but the retailers are concerned that publishers will use the
retailer for exposure and flip the sale.

At least with Fictionwise, this does not prohibit your ability to
offer an occasional sale--and you don't have to lower your price with
the retailer. However, if they determine that your sale is actually
an ongoing price reduction, they may find that you've violated your
contract, kick you off, and who knows what else.

Although it pains me to pay 50% royalties to retailers, I recognize
that they provide a valuable service and recommend not gaming the
system.
