There goes my newfound resolve not to argue with anybody.
Jon, I think that there are two separate things from your
perspective. One is the question you pose: is the group still
fulfilling a function. The other is how you apportion your own
time and responsibilities. The second is one for you to
determine, of course, but I think you should separate it.
The first needs an extra question: What is the function of ebook
community? And, as a supplementary, how do you measure the
fulfillment of that function? And then there is the question of
the natural ebb and flow of activity.
I am not sure if, at a time when the development of the ebook is
expanding quickly, there is a case for limiting the number of
active lists, fora or other communication means. With other
lists seeming to take on a deal of the development and producer
technical and day to day experience it opens ebook community to
be more generalist and open to all aspects of ebook discussion;
with some redirection activity at times.
One aspect which is more pertinent for all ebook makers (and
users) is copyright. Earlier this was hived off in copyright
future, due to the nature of the discussion [and perhaps I use
the word loosely ;-)] at that time. There may be a case for
re-introducing that topic. It its new form it may be a matter
of serious concern for all small and independent publishers, and
for users may well affect future output.
It should also be borne in mind that any list follows the
marketing rules. The longer you've been around, the better
known you are; building on existing 'brands' might be better than
setting up new vehicles.
