Jon,

I started a comment yesterday and then decided it was stupid and
deleted it. My main point was that some people seem to like forums and
some people seem to like mailing lists. I'm a mailing list junkie,
mainly because I am an old timer who downloads my email via POP3
rather than using webmail and once the download is done, I don't have
to wait for messages to load. I HATE forums, because forum page-loads
are too darned slow on my broke-d**k satellite "broadband" ISP.

I'm on ebook-community only not because the other industry email lists
don't interest me, but simply as a matter of "how much email can I
sanely read?" I don't have time for forums at all and blogs seldomly.
Sometimes, I get very behind on my email and much as I'v love to catch
up, I can't and I have to delete things unread as a last resort.

Frankly, a lot of our topics have been done to death. The indies don't
drive the market, much as we might like to. It seems like a lot of our
conversation is academic... not "how do we drive the market?" but
rather "how do we adjust to what the big players are doing to our
market? How do we get our sliver of the pie?" Not that there's
anything wrong with that, but it's hard to generate enthusiasm for
"survival" as opposed to the headier days of a decade ago when ebooks
were going to take over the world and our new, more flexible business
models were going to put the print giants out of business.

JMO, on this cool, partly-sunny morning.

dej, the grouchy
