I am unfamiliar with the various models of Sony reader, but my adult son
received one in May as a graduation gift. Upon experimentation, we
discovered that we could copy HTML files onto a SD card, insert the card
into the Sony reader, and the content would appear in the table of
contents and could be displayed without apparent problem.
If there is anything close to a universal format in e-bookdom it is
HTML. I would say that the majority of reading systems can display HTML
natively, and every system (with the possible exception of Adobe
products) has tools to convert from HTML to its own preferred format. If
you want to minimize compatibility issues I would recommend always
starting with (and archiving in) HTML format.
If you select a Windows Mobile device, I highly recommend the shareware
program µBook (www.gowerpoint.com). If you select a Palm device I would
still recommend µBook because Palm has abandoned its proprietary OS and
now manufactures all its phones to use Windows Mobile. If you're going
with the iPhone or Google's G1 I'm afraid I can't be of any help.
