Hi Rob,
Thanks for your input. I hastily visited some POD publishers online and filled in the name, address, phone #, etc. to receive the free information offered-- that apparently included free annoying. The one in particular, Xlibris, has telephoned and e-mailed me several times a week. I was only making an inquiry, and they now want me to all of a sudden to make a reservation. After looking over the brochure, a 25-35% royalty does not seem all that appealing. The only aspect that seemed appealing was that they procure an ISBN number for the book.
What I have is about 600 pages in Microsoft Word in Times New Roman. Most of the pages are in a table format (it's a different kind of biography) that are positioned in a landscape position (as opposed to a portrait position). It is documented by endnotes, which are color indexed (an idea I thought would readily alert the reader to which are from primary or secondary sources). (Bear in mind that my target audience is the biographical specialist, researcher and university libraries.) I was told to put everything into pdf files. Will pdf maintain the color portions of the text? I checked out the Adobe site to see what software they offer, but the plethora of programs seemed quite confusing, not to mention the prices.
I'm still in the process of compiling my biography. I'm looking for a game plan so that I know the direction to pursue An ebook seems to be the future. It seems to give one much more control over the entire process-- create, package, and sell. I think one can even copyright and obtain an ISBN number (as a publisher). Is there any program that lays out all the steps one should follow, once the "manuscript" is completed?
No doubt there are those in the group who have published their own ebook. I'm wondering if it was a process of trial and error or if there was a somthing similiar to a set of directions to get published. I should have joined this group long before, but I didn't consider an ebook until only a couple of weeks ago. But it seems like the future of the print world.

You're quite right--doing color in paper books is a cost nightmare.
I think you'll find that many eBook creation programs are designed
with gray-scale in mind because most dedicated readers (Sony, Kindle,
eBookwise) support only gray-scale. You might want to consider what
your target reading device is.
If your target reading device is the computer, what about using HTML?
HTML supports color and links (for your thousand or so notes).
I am not familiar with the software you mention but there are
many 'Make Millions in eBooks with our software' programs out there.
It's possible that your book would be right for them but most eBook
customers prefer to read using their already-available environments
rather than having a special application per book (which many of
these programs create).
Best of luck to you--I certainly agree that your book sounds like one
more suitable to electronic than paper publication. Then again, I
believe that virtually all books are better in electronic than paper
publication.
