I use Internet Archive http://www.archive.org/index.php to search material for my book. It contains free ebooks that no longer have a copyright. One is given a choice of formats in which to read the books.

I've been writing my book (with all the tables and footnotes) in Microsoft Word. Eventually I'll have to transfer this into "something" that is compatible for an ebook. I'm still a ways from having to make a choice. From what I've gleaned from members here the two best choices seem to be XHTML or PDF (though pdf does not expand to fill the screen, at the present time). I like the idea of everything being contained in one file as my book so far is around 700 pages (100 pages of footnotes so far!).
What programs or software would one use to transfer the text and tables into the book format? No doubt consideration must be given to font, font size, and the margins. All of my tables are in the "landscape" position; perhaps certain file types are not coompatible with this.
Keep in mind I'm a novice to ebooks.

We technologists tend to think of it starting in 1970 or so, and by 1988
there were 60,000 hosts linked to the ARPANET available to be hit by the
Morris worm, but officially calling it the Internet came in 1995.
Perhaps you're thinking of the World Wide Web, a couple of programs and
protocols which hit the Internet like a hailstorm circa 1993 (actually,
1991, but Mosaic (and pictures) came out in 1993).

Yeah, but whatever that was, it wasn't PDF. Probably Postscript with a
proprietary DRM wrapper. The Camelot project at Adobe, which produced
PDF, started in 1991 -- see Warnock's "Camelot" paper at
http://www.planetpdf.com/planetpdf/pdfs/warnock_camelot.pdf. The "P"
stands for Portable.
So, you're correct in saying that PDF pre-dated officially calling the
Internet the Internet, and almost predated the WWW.
