I'm not sure that that would work for more than a couple of years
(which is considerably smaller than the life of copyright, which has
framed the thread above).
If the work is non-fiction, and is to sell follow-on products, it
probably needs updating frequently, which eliminates or reduces most
of the cost reductions under discussion. If it's fiction, and you're
selling other works by the same author, then either that author is
Methuselah, or these other works are also aging and subject to the
same cost reductions and price ceilings, and there's much less point
in using a loss leader.
And loss leaders only seem to catch on in industries where the
following expenditure will either be very high margin (and that's SO
not us), or where the total will be high, leading to a fair margin in
aggregate, even if it's low as a percentage of the total. Just to toss
in a red herring or so.
In any case, it's an interesting thought.
