I'm sending this to you off-list also.  Don't be offended 
and do stay where the advice is good and the people 
friendly. Things like virus problems always have different 
proponents; you saw not antagonism, but intensity about one 
aspect of using computers.

.exe files have always been a problem, even though there are 
some excellent little programs using it for various 
presentations of ebook.

Do expect to take a month or so to settle in and get to know 
the many names that offer help and interest. I had not had 
the time to answer your introductory post, but I  - and I am 
sure many other members - do indeed welcome you.
