Not exactly true.

Kindles can read *unencrypted* Mobipocket. So Fictionwise's
"multiformat" books can be read on your Kindle, as can Baen's
Webscription books. Just sync them via USB.

However, Kindles can NOT read encrypted Mobipocket books. At least,
not easily. They can if you use a Python script to extract your
Kindle's device ID for the encryption, then run the encrypted book
through *another* Python script to flip a flag in the file that Kindle
requires to be flipped in order for it to recognize the book. But who
apart from a hard-core computer geek is going to know how to do that?

Amazon has "embraced and extended" the Mobipocket format, creating a
new DRM versionfor their Kindle that is (for all intents and purposes)
completely incompatible with the old Mobipocket DRM encryption.

I'm honestly convinced the next step is for them to "extinguish" it.
