Using non-Amazon content is all well and good if that's what you
planned. But considerably more of a problem if your actual plan
was to buy ebooks from Amazon for the Kindle. In that case, an
account cancellation just turned your Kindle into a brick. And
should your Kindle break, it appears that Amazon will not
consider returns on your device. A broken Kindle won't display
any content at all.
As for the MobiPocket Reader titles - plain is likely OK, but if
you are using encrypted MobiPocket titles - Amazon has been
actively working to block the software that people use to
determine their secure MobiPocket PID, needed for encrypted
MobiPocket titles.
All in all - Amazon appears to be doing a better job of showing
the demerits of DRM than Cory Doctorow does, while simultaneously
showing the downside to the customer of an almost-monopoly
vendor.
