reader polling shows shift in preferred formats

LLP's polling, if statistically accurate, shows LIT completely out of the
top 5 now. PDF still ranked highest, but MOBI and Kindle have moved up the
list, as has ePub!

Here are the results of the LL-Publications ebook reader survey, in which we
asked people to nominate their preferred format for current purchase and
reading of ebooks. There were exactly 600 votes cast. Some points to bear in
mind when looking at these results:

1) Many readers do read on several devices. While the survey tried to get
people to vote on their preferred ebook format, there will have those who
voted on what they purchased the most (not necessarily the same thing).

2) Some ebook stores provide all formats on a single download, and some just
single formats. Having access to all formats may have influenced a person's
vote

97 of 600 votes (16.2%)

77 of 600 votes (12.8%)

64 of 600 votes (10.7%)

59 of 600 votes (9.8%)

Microsoft Reader LIT
23 of 600 votes (3.8%)

eReader
22 of 600 votes (3.7%)

Rocket RB
15 of 600 votes (2.5%)

Palm Doc PDB
4 of 600 votes (0.7%)

Hi-ebook KML
0 of 600 votes (0.00%)

It was interesting (to me at least) that PDF's dominance was less than 40%.
I had expected it to be higher since PDF can be read on the majority of
devices, but perhaps this reinforces the fact that there are now some
strong, popular, other formats/reading methods out there. The rise of the
ePub format also shows in this survey, since ePub is a format that can, like
pdf, also be read on several devices.

600 votes was a reasonable total cast, enough to provide a constructive
slice of opinion among readers. Many thanks to those who voted. I may repeat
this vote at another appropriate time, perhaps a year from now.
