Vis a bis proxy servers, there is not necessarily any loss of  
information. A newspaper may only be able to track what it sends out,  
analogous to using a web analytics program that works on server logs.  
However, documents can track themselves when using cookie-based web  
analytics programs like (the free) Google Analytics. Some caveats  
apply. strangely enough, I am writing that chapter now.
