Oops! I was thinking the answer to your analogy while
answering dej, and inadvertently put it to here post where
it makes no sense! Here it is in the right place - me culpa
maxima ;-).
By the way I don't accept the analogy either. The Google
exposure is more a matter of of the changing poster for the
paper or simply the ability to pick it up and check the
content before the purchase decision [doesn't apply to he
coin slot containers of course, but we don't have these in
the UK]. On the whole, let me add, newspapers have no idea
who they sell to, except for the few direct subscriptions.
But you also suggest there is no financial loss from such
photocopying; I think that would not be a sustainable
argument. This seems to be a repeated mantra of the 'free'
advocates and my challenge to show how this is so has never
been answered.
Also I must point out the actual cost of photocpying would
actually be more expensive that buying a copy of the paper.
Only with a digital file is the cost of copying generally
less than the cost of buying. And there is no moral argument
for doing that without payment.
