Question on the formation of book/s

Hello all,

I'm loving this group.

I have a question.  I am looking at writing a series of nonfiction books, teaching a skill.  My research shows that there are some similar products already out there (though I believe I have some unique things to contribute), and that they can be divided into two groups: 

1. The very large "Mega System," which takes a complete beginner through (eventually) to the highest levels, often through a series of books (Book 1, Book 2..)
2. The topical approach, where an author picks a direction and then writes a book on it.

(Obviously fake) examples:

"The Ultimate System for Getting Rich on the Stock Market" in 5 separate books, conceived as a single system, promoted on a single website, etc., even though you may actually be able to buy the books separately on that site
vs. 
a book introducing the stock market to beginners here, another book comparing mutual funds to other funds there, another book of tips and tricks meant ONLY for seasoned pros there, etc., each sold separately, perhaps each on its own website, and without any particular effort made to incorporate them as a group or theme.

I've been thinking about pros and cons and I could list my thoughts, but I would really like to hear from anyone else who has dealt with this question.  I'd love to know what you decided to do, and why.  I know it depends on a number of variables, but hearing what you went through to ultimately reach your decision would be most insightful.
