Dropbook is a free program for converting text to eReader format.
http://www.ereader.com/ereader/software/product/15099_dropbook_win.htm
If you want more than plaintext, you'd have to mark it up with PML
notation first. (I use Word's find-and-replace to put \i before &
after any italics, and \B before & after any bolds. Gotta use "match
case," otherwise it'll change the capitalization sometimes. Then I
save the text of the Word file in a .txt file, and use that for
conversion.)

Adding chapter breaks & centered text is a bit more complicated, but
not difficult once you get used to it.

For converting to other ebook formats, I recommend Calibre, a free
open-source program available at http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net
It doesn't convert from Word directly, but does convert from RTF, and
you can save any Word file as an RTF.

I'm told that Mobipocket ebooks eventually show up at Amazon, but
sometimes there's a delay.

Glassbook is older tech (their site doesn't even say it's compatible
with WinXP, although it probably is); I don't know anything about it.

Mobi and Kindle are the same ebook format with different DRM. And I
believe the K2 has a PID that doesn't work at Mobipocket, so you can't
buy Mobipocket books to install on the Kindle2, unless you strip out
the DRM. (Which involves installation of Python, and a couple of
simple scripts.)

The two most popular ebook formats for mobile devices are .mobi/prc,
and .ePub. Almost all the devices read at least one of those formats.
(I have a Sony Reader. I can read ePub, but not mobi.)

EPub is very popular in Europe, and is being touted as the future of
ebooks in some places, because it's an open source format, so anyone
can use & develop it.
