If you want to see hat RTF is, open it with a text editor (BBEdit for
Mac, not familiar with good text editors for Windows). RTF, like HTML,
are both markup languages. You get a long stylesheet followed by the
marked up text. I wasn't dealing with images at the time I was fooling
with RTF, so I can't say how images might be encapsulated. I can say
that: all RTF are not created equal. Few people seem to know how to
handle them (MS Word will open most any RTF). RTFs created on my Mac
in Nisus Writer (a third party word processor that uses RTF as its
native format) sometimes cannot be read in MS Word for Windows--dunno
why. RTF files are also on the large side for the included content,
FWIW.

I never saw RTF as a great way to distribute ebooks even if its my
format of choice on my computer (Nisus Writer rocks!).
