On further thinking, this could be sinister.
It used to be in the movie industry, the studios would offer a percentage of the "profits" in exchange for the film rights. But somehow the bean-counters would make "profits" disappear in a cloud of fees, expenses, etc. Nowadays, authors' agents know to demand a percentage of the *gross*, a much easier figure to audit.
So we really do need to see Michelle's clarification.
