Just a minor clarification: I could have loaned my copy of the book to anyone. What I couldn't do was put copies of certain chapters in the coursepack of assigned readings. When you're teaching a course, it isn't feasible to share one book around. :) In the past, I've put the book on reserve in the library so students can read it (and I presume some make copies). But I was teaching this particular course online and not all of my students were local. These "distance learning" students purchase coursepacks from the campus bookstore through the mail and/or download information from online. I am not allowed to put copyrighted material in the official website w/o rights-holder permission, and the campus bookstore would not photocopy it either.
