Because PDF allows for typographic features that none of the other ebook
formats quite cover. Because it *can* have incredibly complex layouts, even
on a very small screen. Because it is usable by (if not optimal for) almost
everyone, almost all devices. (Possibly the closest to a truly universal
format is .txt, which has obvious extreme limitations.)

That doesn't mean it's perfect, just that it does have substantial features
in its favor.

My Sony Reader won't read HTA documents. (Nor HTML, for that matter; I have
to convert them to something else.)

Neither will the Kindle. Nor the Aztak Pocket Pro (which will read HTML
natively). Nor the Rocket Ebook. Nor, I suspect, the iPhone. Nor will the
Clié I used to read ebooks on.

PC monitor is fairly low on my preferred list of ebook reading devices.
