Erica gives you excellent overall advice, and a fair view of some facilities in Adobe. An excellent and far less costly alternative to that is Serif PagePlus, which again gives the ability to make changes inside a pdf and some of the other things Erica mentions. I think Serif have also something similar and much cheaper than Creative Suite. 

But I still say that for you at this point start with the free stuff so you learn what you want from a program and what type of interface/facility suits you.
