You once posted the procedure you used to format and flush the unwanted formatting codes from a manuscript. I think it was one of the most informative and helpful things I have read on the subject. If you still have the info where you can post it again without a lot of trouble, I think everyone will find it useful on this loop as well as some others.

Any word processing program can do layout, preferably in a WYSIWYG format.
Some people use MSPublisher or Open Office or WordPerfect or whatever you
use. You do NOT have to use WORD to do anything. Microsoft just wants you to
think that's the case.

I'd say you still need steps in editing, formatting... To me, preparing is
the final error checking step. Overall, your steps are incredibly
simplified. There are multiple steps in each of those steps.
