Here's a shortcut. In MS Word, and I think something similar will work in WordPerfect, select and copy your document, open a new document, and Edit > Paste Special and select "unformatted text". Save as a different file.
Of course, you will still have the tedium of applying your desired formatting styles to the unformatted text. Which gives you another opportunity to make a mess of it! :-)
