E-Books Poised to Challenge Paper Books in Schools

It will be some time before traditional text books are no longer the norm 
in classroom, educators said, but their replacement by digital versions 
such as e-books is looming on the horizon.

"That is the future," said Superintendent of Schools Sidney Freund. "We 
used to talk about kids with backpacks carrying 40 or 50 pounds of books. 
Now they're carrying compact discs."

Digital formats like e-books allow students to read books on a variety of 
platforms, from mobile e-readers such as Kindle that store hundreds of 
titles, to laptop and desktop computers, to interactive classroom tools 
like Smartboards.

Embedded features such as streaming video and audio clips, as well as 
quick-look reference guides, can enhance the learning experience, 
educators said.

"Because you can bring in such different elements, you can really make 
(the lesson) come alive" with e-books and Smartboards, said Fran Kompar, 
district coordinator for library and media services.

School officials are now looking at the possibility of replacing paper 
books with electronic versions that they said would save money and allow 
students to get more up-to-date information.
