They don't need quite the same treatment (and many mainstream
publishers don't include covers on ebooks because they only licensed
the art for the initial print run; they don't have the rights to
distribute it digitally), but covers on ebooks do help. They encourage
sales, and are more likely to be treated as "books" instead of
"generic digital files."

Many ebook readers/programs have ways of viewing covers, and some
allow scrollthrough of a collection by cover, and seeing a dozen or
more generic covers assigned by the ebook store (1) is boring and (2)
reinforces the notion that "this isn't a real book; it's just a
patched-together copy of a book."

Ebooks without covers are reminiscent of those stripped-cover
paperbacks that are supposed to be destroyed, but a good number of
them find their way into recycle/garbage bins & get grabbed and shared
around anyway.
