It really depends on what you're writing. You often have to tone down erotic
covers for the bookstores, for instance. Why? I imagine it would be because
erotic publishers on the internet make a blanket warning that it's not safe
for kids on the site and that's it...covered legally, while bookstores don't
really have a "back room" like video stores sometimes do, so kids can be
wandering anywhere in the store and "exposed" to adult content in the form
of cover art.

And depending on the distribution you'll need, you can often have e-book
covers in smaller sizes and a slightly lower dpi than you require for
printing books. Some of my e-book covers are only 1200 pixel high (vs.
2500-3000) and 200 dpi rather than 300. A lot of companies have at least the
high res, large front cover for both, but won't make the back cover, spine,
and ugly block for an e-book.

As for quality... I've seen e-book covers that are much lower quality than
conglomerate covers...and vice versa. I've had NY conglomerate authors tell
me they want art like mine (from my Xxan series, for instance) for their NY
books. Some publishers do very nicely with cover art and some don't. In
general, indie/e covers tend to be more representative of the books...as do
the blurbs. But that's not universal. Nothing is.
