Wow...you don't ask for much. How does the process work? With a publisher or
self-publishing? There are two distinct routes, and they are very different.
I've done both, but which are you contemplating?

How does one make money? Simply put.

1. Offer a quality product that is appealing to readers. Blurb and cover it
well.
2. Distribute it where readers buy e-books.
3. Market it as fully as you can.
4. Write the next book and get it out there, because it really takes 3 or
more books to make a name for yourself.

How much can you make? That depends on a lot of factors, from genre you're
writing in to distribution, publisher name recognition, your name
recognition, marketing effectively, quality, a new voice or concept, even to
pure dumb luck and good timing.

The average book will sell no more than 200 copies in the first year,
according to several people who've asked authors for numbers. I would
personally consider that a failure in the first few months, let alone a
year. My standards are fairly high. With some publishers, you can expect to
sell at least 500-1000 copies in the first month, but you need to be writing
what sells for them.

Some people make enough in indie/e alone to replace a day job. I know one
author that gave up a $50,000 per year job, because she made more writing.
Some make a supplementary income. I make supplementary income. Some hope
they can buy McDonald's for the kids at the end of the month.
