Helen,

I think you have to be a little bit clearer about what you are asking. Piracy is against copyright law. Or in defiance of it. Pirates commit breaches of that law and are open to being sued among other remedies.

I suggest you start by doing a search for copyright and copyright law and spend a half hour reading some that.

It will give you a start on understanding copyright.
