Let's start from a slightly different position to answer your question.

Let's talk about the practical ways your interest might be satisfied.
1. A counter-question: what is your purpose, your real purpose, in asking?
2. What kind of 'real effects' did you expect to discover?
3. What actual business information would this involve?
4. How do you propose this information could be collected into a meaningful body of information?
4a. Who pays the cost of gathering and analysing such precise, detailed and complex statistics?
5. Do you think you understand enough about publishing to evaluate any such information?

If you have been reading this list you are fully aware that publishing is an extremely complex business, with a wide variety of business models, let alone types of publication. What you may not understand from this list is that it deals here with only one aspect, and that only modern, of a means of delivering high-cost writing to you and others.

That cost, by the way, is not just money cost. In fact the money cost, which can be quite considerable depending on the nature of the work, may pale beside the efforts of the author and the other helpers, advisors and contributors. Most of those are not remunerated until many copies of the work are sold.

I doubt if it needs a doctorate in marketing to work out that, while free give-aways can invite someone into a store, giving away what's on the shelves is a very fast road to bankruptcy. Taking off the shelf without permission or payment does the same thing. Once an item is given away or stolen, what is the need to buy it?

Now, I return to my questions above; they are very serious. If you are trying to justify your acts, you must demonstrate why you have any entitlement to ask these questions (which are completely irrelevant to the moral dimension), and also what detail you are actually talking about.

The ball is in your court, Bill. Oh, and don't quote ''The Short-Term Influence of Free Digital Versions of Books on Print Sales John Hilton III and David Wiley -- This paper was refereed by the Journal of Electronic Publishing's peer reviewers.'' unless you want to see real acid poured on pretension. 

As a first toe in the water of discovery in the field it is to be commended. But it offers no information that is statistically useful or valid beyond its precise inputs, and absolutely no conclusions can be drawn from it.
