Maybe I misread you here (my apologies, if I did), but I disagree. I believe
affordable POD and e-books combined will replace mass market.

The NY conglomerate system is broken. I understand that they want to keep it
going, and they want to keep hard bound for the library and book club
markets, if nothing else, but a system like the one I suggested more than
five years ago would eliminate a large portion of stripping/returns, waste
in printing, warehousing, and shipping.

What is that system? Get POD printers, like the Espresso, in the book
stores. Have shelved bestsellers and new releases as well as things with a
current tie-in (like books with a new movie release) and a selection of
other popular books...including board books, which you can't really POD
print on site. Have computer kiosks that readers can use (like Borders has,
as opposed to the employee only ones B&N does) and integrate the computer
systems so customers can order and pay from home and just walk in and pick
books up. Alternately, anyone that doesn't live close enough to pick books
up can order from home and have books shipped out to them, which means a
dedicated shipping staff at the store and/or an extra charge for on-site
delivery service. All books ordered at the store kiosk or home computer
would be printed at the in-store machines and available for pick-up at the
front desk (or shipping/delivery). If someone takes a book off the shelves,
an order will be sent to the printer to make a new copy for shelving (unless
it is a phase-out anyway, in which case shelved copies are allowed to
dwindle).

From a programming standpoint, it's simple enough. From an initial
investment standpoint, it will be expensive but not impossible to implement,
and it will ease the system. With a system like this, they could get book
costs for POD trade paperback down to the cost for mass market pulp books
easily.
