Thank you Joseph et al. When I first published my book on Amazon, last November, they were paying writers 35% of net. In June, they are starting to pay 65%. Smashwords pays 75% of net and they will put the book on various sites, which is a real service. There is no copy protection, so I am debating how important that is. I keep swinging between buying a Kindle or an Apple iPad. The iPad also reads magazines and newspapers, and has email and general internet capability. The lines between a notebook computer and an Apple iPad are dim. For someone interested in the eBook industry like me, the Sony or Apple might be best so I can read all formats. Joseph, don't you think the mass market paperbacks are more likely to be on Kindle than anywhere else? In part that relates to the very reason for your question about ebooks. The water is flowing fast under the bridge; for those who can amass libraries to sell the prospects are immense. > > Every time I read a figure - always that amazing 80-20 break seems to appear - I know that the information is at best suspect, at worst PR. There is simply a dearth of intelligent research into these totals. Even industry figures are not inclusive, but in some ways just self-selective. > > If you write fast enough, and are likely to sell enough, then making Amazon your publisher [for the Kindle] might make sense for you. But you will need to be very clear on their terms - the headline percentage you quote leaves me with questions about the Amazon size of take. Remember also they can change prices. It is 65%; but 65% of what? And that 35% seems an awful lot for the very cheap ebook system, when Amazon does very little in terms of cost. > > On the other hand if you wanted to there are many self-publishing routes. > > In the end your decision must depend on your own needs. In fact, better than tying yourself to Amazon, it might be worth exploring some other marketing/publishing services. Especially if they simply include Amazon with much wider exposure. > > Joseph > > Joseph Harris - Debt Control Man > http://www.controlyourdebtcrisis.co.uk > Author: Control Your Debt Crisis on Your Own Terms > http://twitter.com/debtcontrolman > SAQ - SAve the cheQue > > From: "berylgorbman" > > > > I've received lots of response to my initial question, some snotty and most constructive. Right now, I don't think the average citizen knows what to buy. To them, the riddle is whether to choose the Apple tablet or the Kindle. Oh yeah, then there's the Sony. But I think within the next six months, things will sort themselves out and the general public will know where they can buy ebooks online and from which readers to access them. Right now this information is changing by the day. > > > ........ > > To rephrase my question, what reader do you think will predominate among mass market readers who have no technical ability whatsoever and no interest in acquiring any? > > > ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ Post a message: ebook-community [[at]] * Unsubscribe: ebook-community-unsubscribe [[at]] * Switch to digest: ebook-community-digest [[at]] * Switch to normal: ebook-community-normal [[at]] * Put mail on hold: ebook-community-nomail [[at]] * Administrator: ebook-community-owner [[at]] * (* == yahoogroups.com) -------------------------------------------------------Yahoo!
