A quick check on this suggests that Stanza drops the images on the Mac, but 
that the actual reader on the iPod Touch/iPhone shows them just fine. You 
should probably try that if you haven't already.

A slightly related point - you describe these as 'spreadsheets' which likely 
means they are either line drawings or screenshots. Both of those types of 
images would typically be better displayed with PNG images rather than JPEG. 
The line/screen images would be crisper, since the PNG format is lossless. It 
doesn't do as well on real-world photos, but it should be smaller, faster, and 
better looking than JPEG for 'drawn' images.

Best option of all - produce two documents, one with each type of image, and 
compare the file size and the user experience on each one.
