Perhaps this doesn't give enough information.

LSI is LightningSource Inc. http://www.lightningsource.com, part of the Ingram group of companies, and a sister company to Ingram Books, the largest distributor of books in the U.S. In order to sell to traditional bookstores, getting your book listed in Ingram is extremely important. Almost everyone in the industry that has a consumer orientation purchases from Ingram Books. Most Internet-based retailers in the U.S. also purchase and get their data from Ingram, so listing a book there means that it automatically appears in Barnes&Noble.com and Amazon.com, among many, many others.

In many respects LSI is the pioneer print-on-demand printer. Because they have the policy of listing every book they print in Ingram Books' database, books printed there tend to sell better. Many of the author-oriented vanity/subsidy publishers actually print using LSI and get listed on Ingram in this manner.

LSI is NOT a publisher. They are a printer or printing and distribution service. If you want to print your books there, you become the publisher.

LSI does offer an ebook solution, through which you can get distribution (and copy protection) for ebooks that you prepare. But the sense that I have is that not many in the market actually pick up ebook listings from LSI. At best, LSI is only one of the places to get ebooks distributed. Limiting your ebooks to just LSI is a little like just selling your books through Barnes & Noble -- it gets you a portion of the market, but also leaves out a large portion of the market.
