I've been working with Smashwords for a while now--I publish other authors and have a publisher account with Smashwords--and I've only had this problem with ONE vendor, Sony. I really don't know what is going on with Sony and Smashwords, but I don't think it's Smashwords' fault. Our books were in the iBookstore the day the store launched thanks to Smashwords--and that was with about 48 hours' notice! Our titles are also in Kobo and Barnes & Noble via Smashwords. I hand-code my own Kindle books and put those up myself. Smashwords is doing a pretty good job--for the price! :-) Sony, on the other hand, is at the top of my dirt list these days. They rather rudely tell authors and small publishers to go through Smashwords or Authorhouse to get into the Sony Reader store, and as far as I can tell, they're just blowing off Smashwords and not accepting titles. Sony appears to be stuffing its ebook store with public domain books from Google and top sellers from the big publishers. Referring authors to Authorhouse, in my opinion, is particularly scummy: it's like a bank turning down a loan applicant and giving the applicant the number of the local mafia loan shark. Moreover, I can't see that any Authorhouse titles are in the Sony store, either. And just *try* to get in touch with anyone at Sony about the Reader Store. I've got *quite* a story about *that!* Apple, for all my jaundiced view of them, is welcoming small press books with open arms as long as we meet their strict criteria and go through any one of many aggregators they're using. Now it appears that they're allowing authors to "publish" individually via iTunes. But Apple is definitely cooperating with Smashwords, and so are Kobo (which is now allied with Borders) and Barnes & Noble. Also, I've read in various forums that people have found that even though a title might be 'shipped' from Smashwords to an ebook onseller, that the title still never appears in that sellers catalog. For reading an EPUB book on any platform, I find that Stanza does the job on my iPod Touch perfectly. Stanza's great; you can set up any online ebook source within the program (e.g. manybooks.net) and download titles directly.
