ebook formats - minimum

I have been trying to get my head round the actual formats that make ebook publishing easy, or easier.

So far as I can see pdf can be coped with by all devices except azbooks and WISEreader. But it obviously can't be that easy ;-).

If one stayed with pdf, are there sources explaining  variations to suit at least the main devices? And how good at handling non-native formats are device owners ;-).
