As I understand the way Iads works on the Ipad and Iphone and Touch, the publisher doesn't have to sell ads.  He just has to make sure his software supports them.  Apple has the staff to find the advertisers and that's what they do.
If my understanding is correct and that makes them money then it won't be long before someone jumps in to provide the same service on other platforms, assuming they aren't already there.
I think that renders the arguments linked to below invalid.
I certainly hope I'm wrong.  I buy my books but I won't buy ads.
