I don't know what the original poster or the article was inferring,
but I would find it very frustrating reading a text book on an ereader.
When I studied those many years ago, I would skim through the text
book and get a feel for it and managed to retain a surprising amount
of data that first skim through. I haven't used a Kindle DX, but I do
have an iPad and while it's good for a lot of things, I don't think it
would be good for reference books since reading on it is still a
linear experience and it's not easy to skip around in the book.
I expect the information gained from the trials outlined in the
article will go a long way to helping ebook publishers and ereader
makers to improve the experience. A hyperlinked index, thumbnails of
images and figures etc. will make it much more like using the paper
book.
